Come here often? Are you my cousin? In Iceland, a country with a population of , where most everyone is distantly related, inadvertently kissing cousins is a real risk. A new smartphone app is on hand to help Icelanders avoid accidental incest. The app lets users “bump” phones, and emits a warning alarm if they are closely related. Some are hailing it as a welcome solution to a very Icelandic form of social embarrassment. People may think it’s funny, but the app is a necessity. The Islendiga-App — “App of Icelanders” — is an idea that may only be possible in Iceland, where most of the population shares descent from a group of 9th-century Viking settlers, and where an online database holds genealogical details of almost the entire population. The app was created by three University of Iceland software engineering students for a contest calling for “new creative uses” of the Islendingabok, or Book of Icelanders, an online database of residents and their family trees stretching back 1, years. Arnar Freyr Adalsteinsson, one of the trio, said it allows any two Icelanders to see how closely related they are, simply by touching phones.

Where do people meet in Iceland and what are the dating rules in the country of ice and fire? There are a couple of ongoing myths about dating life here in Iceland. One is that we are constantly dating our relatives, another that we actually never go on dates and another one that sex is such a normal thing everyone is doing it all the time with everyone.
No, we are not. The reason this myth has blossomed is, I think, because we have these amazing records dating back over a thousand years so if me and this guy I am seeing share the same great, great, great, great, great grandmother, we are going to know. It just sounds like it because they can actually trace this. This we do on our website, the book of Icelanders. So this means that our great, great, great, great grandmothers were sisters.

Typing in a name will do the trick, but Icelanders who are face-to-face can simply bump phones for results if they both have the app, that is. Sad Engineers calls this feature “Sifjaspellsspillir,” or “Incest Spoiler. If you’re thinking it can really be that big of a problem, apparently it is.
